What is USB-C?

USB-C, or USB Type-C, is a symmetrical and reversible plug, engineered to supersede older USB formats. It serves as a universal and versatile interface for both data transfer and charging purposes, offering convenience and efficiency.

In the realm of charging, USB-C has become the universal standard connector for smartphones, with its adoption expanding to various other electronic devices that require charging.

Notably, recent trends show that smartphones are now shipped without charger plugs, including only the USB-C to USB-C cable in the package, reflecting a shift towards minimising accessory inclusion.

USB-C Features

Enhanced power delivery
USB-C heralds a new era of power delivery. With USB Power Delivery (USB PD), it facilitates faster charging and supports higher power levels, accommodating larger devices like laptops and tablets.

Faster data transfer speeds
Speed matters, especially in data transfer. USB-C accelerates this process, ensuring swift exchange of files and information between devices.

Universal compatibility
One connector to rule them all. USB-C's versatility spans across devices, from smartphones to laptops, ensuring compatibility and convenience.

Reversible connector
No more flipping your USB cable repeatedly. USB-C ends the ordeal of figuring out which way to plug in, offering hassle-free connectivity.

USB-C Fast Charge

Fast charging refers to the ability to charge a device at a significantly accelerated rate compared to standard charging methods. It aims to reduce the time needed to charge a device fully or to a significant level.

Fast charging works by delivering a higher power output to the device, allowing for quicker replenishment of the battery's energy. This is achieved through various technologies, such as USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) or Qualcomm Quick Charge, which regulate the power flow to optimise charging speed while ensuring safety and battery longevity.

While traditional charging methods may take hours to fully charge a device, fast charging can accomplish the same task in a fraction of the time, often within minutes. Many smartphones advertise the ability to charge from 0%-50% or more in about 30 minutes.

How does it compare to regular charging?
Regular charging pales in comparison to the lightning-fast speed of fast charging. It's like comparing a tortoise to a cheetah.

Whether it's your smartphone or your laptop, USB-C ensures rapid charging, keeping you connected when you need it most.

*Fast charge can only be achieved by using a compatible charging cable and device.

Charging Protocols

USB-C isn't just a one-size-fits-all solution—it's adaptable. With various charging protocols supported, including Power Delivery (PD) and Quick Charge, USB-C ensures efficient and safe charging for all your devices.

But what is Power Delivery (PD) and Qualcomm(QC), and how does it help me charge faster?

Power Delivery (PD)
USB PD empowers USB-C, enabling it to deliver higher power levels, catering to a broader range of devices. Giants like Apple and Google harness its potential in their devices.

Qualcomm (QC)
Qualcomm Quick Charge complements USB-C, providing yet another avenue for rapid charging. Devices equipped with Snapdragon processors, including Samsung smartphones, leverage QC for expedited charging.

Okay, but what do they actually do?

  • Charges bigger and more intensive devices. Higher power levels allows for charging laptops and tablets as well as smartphones.
  • Faster charging: Designed to handle higher speeds than USB A, for faster and quicker charging.
  • Maximises efficiency - Adjusts the power levels to maximise efficiency based on the devices needs & capabilities.
  • Protects your devices via Smart Charging: The charger and the device communicate to determine the optimal amount of power transfer. This communication ensures compatibility and safety, preventing risk of damage caused by overcharging or overheating.

Common Questions

Why is everything changing to USB-C?

USB-C is becoming the universal standard for charging devices due to it’s elevated performance, fast charging capabilities and enhanced safety procedures compared to older USB versions.

The European Parliament's initiative for a common charger for mobile devices is a significant catalyst. This push towards standardisation simplifies our lives and underscores the importance of USB-C's universality and compatibility.

Are all USB-C cables the same?

No, not all USB-C cables are the same. It's essential to invest in high-quality cables to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.

Will a 45W socket charge faster than a 22W socket?

A 45W charger typically charges faster than a 22W charger, however charging speeds will vary depending on the device and charging conditions, some factors to consider:

  • Device capability: If the device supports fast charging of 45W or above, you will see faster charging than with a 22W socket. If the device can only accept 22W, then charging speed for your device will be the same.

  • Cable quality and type: The charging cable must support higher wattage for fast charging.

  • Battery management software: As the battery gets closer to full capacity, the device's software controls may slow down the charging speed to prevent damage, affecting the perceived charging speed difference between a 45W and a 22W charger.

Can I use a USB-C to charge my laptop and tablet?

The latest BG 45W USB-C Wall Socket is perfect for laptops, whilst the 22W USB-C Wall Socket is ideal for charging tablets and phones.

What is the difference between Variable Voltage and Fixed Voltage?

Variable Voltage sockets use built-in smart charging technology to communicate with the individual device, to only deliver the power a device needs, when it needs it. Meaning devices can charge from 0-50% or more, in as little as 30 minutes.

Variable Voltage follows three stages of charging:

  • Stage 1: Where fast charging occurs – 50% in 30 minutes.
  • Stage 2: The output slows as the battery nears full to protect battery health.
  • Stage 3: Once the battery is fully charged a small charge will be offered periodically as a ‘top up’, whilst pushing the maximum output to the other USB Port.

This protects and prolongs battery life, by never overcharging connected devices.

Our 45W & 22W USB Sockets are Variable Voltage.

How do I know if my device is Fast Charge compatible?

Not all devices support USB-C Fast Charging capability, here’s a few things you can do to try to find out if your device can;

Check Device Specifications: Review your device's manual or visit the manufacturer's website to identify if it supports USB-C Fast Charging. Look for specific mentions of fast charging capabilities in the specifications.

Inspect Cable and Charger: If your device came with a USB-C cable and charger, check if they are labelled as supporting fast charging. The packaging or product descriptions usually mention if they are compatible with fast charging.

Use Compatible Accessories: Ensure you are using compatible accessories, including chargers and cables, that support USB-C Fast Charging. Some devices may not fast charge with generic or lower-quality accessories.

Check Charging Speed: Test the charging speed of your device using a USB-C charger and cable known for fast charging capabilities. If your device charges significantly faster than with standard accessories, it likely supports USB-C Fast Charging
